<itunes:summary>"Choosing not to act on an angry impulse and to feel the pain that lies beneath it is a very courageous thing to do." -Gary Zukav

I've got a dear friend who has a very patient husband. He's there when she's sweet and loving, and he's there when she's petulant and argumentative. My friend, and I say this with love, is moody. She's lucky to have found a man who rides the wave as he does. He lives by a code, while mood still dictates her behavior. Here's what I've offered her...and you.

We all have the choice to live by our mood or live by our code. Living by our mood means arguing and criticizing when we feel argumentative and critical. Living by our code means deciding in advance how we're going to treat others, no matter how we feel. Yes, it's a harder choice, but it lacks the negative consequences of the easy one. Do you have a code?

Listen to this week's podcast above (or on your iPod) about how to develop and live from a code.

PS. I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU ABOUT YOUR CODE OF CONDUCT. PLEASE SHARE IT IN THE COMMENTS SECTION BELOW! AND THANKS TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE CONTRIBUTING SO MUCH TO OUR LIVING IN THE PRESENT PROGRAM THIS MONTH!</itunes:summary>

It was a dismal, cold and rainy day. I called my friend in a neighboring state, and she told me it was bright and sunny there. That seemed hard to comprehend. I think it always seems that when it's raining here, it must be that way everywhere. Obviously not true, but a convincing illusion.

It's the same with mood. When mine is "overcast," the notion of happiness is inconceivable. But, there's an opportunity in conceiving it nonetheless. Tuning in to the idea that joy exists when we are melancholy is not just a lame illusion or Pollyanna thinking...but an absolute reality. As a pilot, I can say with authority that it's possible to climb above a dismal day into a brightly lit sky. I don't recommend denying our gloom, but I do suggest simultaneously envisioning the brightness that exists above it. Listen to the discussion of this above.

The mindfulness assessment and the follow up calls I've been doing have shown me how stuck many of you feel. So, here's the deal. You're NOT stuck! It just looks that way. You don't need to keep that sixty hour per week job, and you don't need your husband's approval to stay focused and positive about your business. What you need is to decide for yourself what's serving you and what's not. And then, you need the courage to make the necessary changes.

And you can't wait until circumstances allow those changes. Because they never will. Nothing changes until you change it. Take a chance. Take a leap. Invest in yourself even if you have no money. Take the time to learn and do, even if you have no time. Create it from within, and the Universe will cooperate by aligning itself around your committed actions. But DO IT NOW...because there is no tomorrow.

PS. WE'LL BE STARTING A LIVING IN THE PRESENT SIX WEEK COURSE ON MAY 1 AT 8PM EASTERN TIME. IF YOU'RE NOT ALREADY ENROLLED AND ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING THE SKILLS TO BE EMPOWERED IN THE NOW, SEND ME AN EMAIL AND I'LL GET YOU THE DETAILS. <itunes:summary>As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.
- John F. Kennedy
Do you know what I like about you, dear reader? I like the way you approach your life. I like the way you open to new ideas. I like it that you're inquisitive and thoughtful. I like it that you like me!
I believe those words to be true, and as such, I feel no dishonesty in saying them, even though you and I may never have met face to face. I say these words, knowing that gratitude and appreciation feel good to the recipient, even when the connection to the sender is slight. (Try going up to a random stranger sometime, smiling and saying thanks. They may be confused, but they'll still feel good, smile back, and in all likelihood, say you're welcome.)
Expressing gratitude transforms the sender as well. In any one moment, there are things you can be grateful for and things that you can be aggravated by. You get to choose your focus. So, this week, I have a challenge for you. It's a magic trick. Start a conversation with at least three people with, "Do you know what I like about you?" And see what you make appear!

<itunes:summary>While coaching a client yesterday about the sheer overwhelm she's been experiencing, and the inevitable consequence of feeling numb and passionless, I was reminded of an ancient Sufi story about Nasruddin, who lived in a small hut with his wife, seven children, five dogs, three cats, twelve chickens, three sheep and a goat. One day, the goat got out. Nasruddin awoke, took a deep breath, and said, "Wow, it's so roomy in here!"

While we tend to look at our lives as being busy and unsatisfying beyond repair, often it's a matter of removing one small thing. For my client, just imagining the possibility of delegating a few of her work chores allowed her to breathe again. What's your goat? What one thing can you remove in order to create more space and a sense of relief? Remove that goat, and notice how quickly you start feeling passion and hope once again!

<itunes:summary>"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won." -Gandhi

While visiting my nephew in California this week, I got to watch him with his friends. What a treat. He and they are incredible people; thoughtful, wise and talented. A great conversation took place while he was preparing a dinner for us, something he does fairly often, apparently...and he's good at it. "Why is everything you make SO good," someone asked. "My mentor at the Italian restaurant I used to work at taught me to always put a little bit of love into everything I make," was his response.

I thought about how true that is of everything we do. A little bit of love goes a long way. What contribution would you make to others if you put a little bit of love into your presentations...into your sales...into your leadership? What if everything you did was really just a vehicle for conveying love; every song you sing, every memo you send, every meal you cook, every sale you make? This week, consider putting a little bit of love into everything you touch, and see how it affects your confidence, your satisfaction, and your results.

Isn't it remarkable how clever your brain is at talking you out of things? You know that action precedes results, but in THIS case, you think, there's a good reason not to take action. Of course, you tell yourself, next time conditions will be right, and I'll do it! But what happens next time? Often the same thing!

Perhaps now is the time to recognize the pattern...and break it. When that "reasonable" voice crops up to tell you why now is not the time, see it for what it is. FEAR. Then, take action anyway.

Join us this week for a discussion of how fear masquerades as logic, and how we can learn to break free of its hold on us. You'll find the recording at the top of the blog post, and starting this week... YOU CAN SUBSCRIBE TO MY PODCAST TO HEAR THE WEEKLY WISDOM LESSONS ON YOUR SMARTPHONE OR MP3 PLAYER! Just go to the iTunes store and type my name into the search. Oh, it's FREE!

<itunes:summary>"Our minds are habitual abusers of our souls, repeat offenders." -Dr. Steve Taubman

We want a better life. We want a bigger house, a better car, a prettier girlfriend, a more successful husband, fame and fortune, and lots of other stuff. We hope that these things will make us happy. Yet we find that they don't. We eventually come to realize the truth. Our source of happiness is within. Our striving for a better life does feed us and inspire us, but not for the reasons we think. We are inspired by the journey, not the destination. We are made more alive by the experience of co-creating our universe in conjunction with certain laws of nature. We find the laws of prosperity are the same as the laws of nature.

All things come and go. They arise, remain a while, and dissolve. Everything is flowing. Everything is transient. We begin to embrace the idea that our happiness is tied directly to our ability to appreciate that flow. We stop holding onto things. We face the fear of letting go and experiment with the art of giving. We discover that when we give of ourselves, we always get filled back up. Nothing we have requires us to hold onto it so tightly that we squeeze out of it every last nugget of enjoyment.

We play with the idea of trust. We take baby-steps towards trusting the benevolence of the universe. We set goals and find that we are enlivened by them. We get what we want, become cocky and arrogant, then lose it and regain our humility. This happens again and again, and still we strive to improve ourselves. Sometimes, we get weary, and we become resigned. Surely it's easier to stay stuck where we are than to risk yet another disappointment! But before long, the resignation feels like a death, and we become willing to take a chance on life yet again.

We stumble upon wisdom. Universal truths present themselves. We start to notice commonalities between various philosophies, sciences, and religions. We become curious about the things that everyone seems to be saying; those things upon which everyone agrees can't be ignored. We take note of the fact that science and religion are coming together. We hear that we have the power to direct our consciousness, and that in doing so, we can create our lives.

The message is optimistic, but our experience frustrates us. In a world of infinite possibility, we ask, why do we continue to recreate the same limited reality again and again? So, in search of an answer to that question, we study ourselves. We find that our minds are habitual abusers of our souls, repeat offenders. We lament that if we were half as abusive to others as we are to ourselves, we'd be in jail.

Our minds need training. We learn to use tools to bring about a shift in our consciousness, but we find that the mind is very clever. It uses our tools against us. We attempt to overcome anger and fear and find that we're angry at our anger and afraid of our fear. We search for answers, and we gain and we lose and we gain again.

And here we are. All of us a bit wounded but resilient. A bit discouraged but hopeful. We're ready to try something new, and although we have our doubts, we'll take the leap, and we'll rejoice at the end of the journey because... We are alive! </itunes:summary>
