If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. -Maya Angelou
Every self help guru will agree that success and attitude go hand in hand; that how you think and what you believe determine your outcomes. In fact, if you’re down, frustrated or filled with self-pity, almost anyone you talk to, given the chance, will say something to you like, “What you need is an attitude adjustment!”
But how easy are attitudes to adjust? How readily can you switch your mood, your beliefs, or your predominant thoughts about yourself, your circumstances or an impending task?
In truth, they’re pretty hard to adjust. Witness the people you know who are negative. How much do they change? How much do you change? So, saying, “Adjust your attitude!” is a lovely but often inactionable bit of advice. It only works when someone knows how to do it. So, here are the three steps to adjusting your attitude (or belief, or mood)
- Don’t believe what you think. Doubt yourself. The fact that things seem grim has more to do with the filter through which you’re seeing them than reality itself.
- Get out of your head and into your body. Stop trying to think up a new attitude and instead be with the physical sensations you’re currently feeling
- Learn to go into a meditative state where you can suggest positive messages to yourself and absorb them at a deeper level than the negative ones you now have
Once you adopt this procedure, you’ll begin to understand what it means to adjust your attitude, and you’ll have less internal resistance to change!

I had an interesting conversation with a woman in network marketing yesterday about her aversion to “closing the sale.” Nothing new. Lots of us have the issue. But something she said made a light go on in my head. I suddenly understood why so many people fear closing, and what they’re telling themselves that’s JUST PLAIN WRONG! If you get this distinction, you’ll be on the road to the cure for your close-o-phobia…so check this out now!
