One of the exercises I use in my programs is having the group divide into two halves, and then having each half line up facing the other. Each person stands face to face with someone, only inches away, and they look into each others’ eyes. The instruction is to simply gaze. Don’t add anything to the experience. Yet, invariably, people smile, giggle, fidget, break eye contact, squint, make faces, and all sorts of other strategies
What exactly does networking mean anyway? Is it going to Chamber mixers every week? Is it meeting as many people as possible? Is networking handing out business cards? Effective networking is not contacting as many people as possible, cold calling or shooting out emails. Effective networking (and very few people are really that good at it) is really connecting with the network of people who are connected to you and you do not know them.
