Working Your Business? Pee First!

OK, I’m guessing this title got your attention. Have you ever had something to do  when working your business or around the house (make a phone call, was some dishes, fold your laundry…) but you also had to pee? Have you noticed that you’re often more likely to scramble to get those things done before heading to the bathroom; all the time feeling a vague, or not so vague, sense of discomfort?

It’s a weird choice to make, because if you just took a minute to go to the bathroom, the task at hand would probably be a lot more pleasant. You’d be less likely to make mistakes, cut corners, rush through and feel agitated. So, why wouldn’t you do it in the more logical order?

The reason is that your mind is constantly imposing a sense of urgency on you regarding the things you need to do. At some subconscious level, you reason that NOTHING is more important than that next action. So you suppress your inner experience to the point of ignoring bodily needs.

I call that being a slave to your mind. Living as a mind-slave has serious consequences, most of which you’re completely unaware of.

When you’re hungry, irritable, tired, or in need of a bathroom, your work is ineffective and you’re not living a particularly joyful life. Yet something inside bids you continue.

I say STOP! Listen to your body. Honor its needs. Respect yourself. Take a moment for your own inner peace. Don’t get caught in the addictive, obsessive pattern that drives you onward, ignoring your very well-being.

The decision to become mindful of your inner experience will save you enormous heartache. When you become adept at checking in with yourself and honoring your inner promptings, you’ll stop bulldozing yourself into situations that later prove to be useless or even damaging.

Take the time to tune in to your body. Learn to hear and respect “body wisdom.” Stop letting your mind convince you that whatever you’re doing is more important than you are.
Who knows, the increase in self respect and decrease in stress might even make you a better and more efficient worker! Just a thought!
