“It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”      -Ralph Waldo Emerson

A very nice man contacted me yesterday about a crippling fear of discussing his business with friends and family members. It’s a network marketing business, and he’s terrified of being judged, rejected or demeaned. He’s done “personal growth” work to try to figure out why he’s so scared,  but it hasn’t helped. I told him that it doesn’t matter why. Understanding is the booby prize. Knowing why you’re not doing something won’t make you do it. What he needed were three things, and none had anything to do with his history.

First, he needed to reidentify himself and separate himself from the thoughts and emotions invading his mind. “You’re not those thoughts. You’re “Totally Cool Rob!” (not his real name) When they come, notice them, but don’t identify with them. Keep reminding yourself who you REALLY are beyond those invading voices.

Second, he needed to set a powerful intention. “Why are you doing this? Who are you trying to benefit? Are your intentions pure and honorable?” Once he connects to the purity of his intentions, he’ll become bullet-proof.

Finally, he needed to fight for what he believes in. Not that everyone will become a customer or client, but when he caves in at the first sign of rejection, he’s demonstrating a lack of conviction. We all need to stand tall and speak our truth even when someone doubts us or disagrees with us. If what we have is good, we have to own that and not let anyone else define the value of our offering. To do anything less is selfish and cowardly.

Be your highest self, be clear about your positive intentions, and speak your truth without fear of disagreement. Whether others agree or not, it’s YOU who must decide if your words have merit. Own that and you’re success will be assured!

I had an interesting conversation with a woman in network marketing yesterday about her aversion to “closing the sale.” Nothing new. Lots of us have the issue. But something she said made a light go on in my head. I suddenly understood why so many people fear closing, and what they’re telling themselves that’s JUST PLAIN WRONG! If you get this distinction, you’ll be on the road to the cure for your close-o-phobia…so check this out now!
