I have a friend; someone I consider conscious, intelligent, and kind. Yet, when she’s upset or irritable, she’s not above treating her husband harshly and with disrespect. It’s painful to see, hurtful to him, and embarrassing to her when she recovers herself and realizes what she’s done.
We all have times when we clearly do the WRONG thing. Sometimes it’s because we don’t know what the right thing is…. but more often, it’s because we give ourselves the latitude to act from our emotions rather than our values.
This requires discipline, strength, and a set of inviolable personal rules. One of those is STOP… Never act or decide anything when you are SCARED, TIRED, OVERWHELMED or PISSED OFF (substitute PEEVED if you don’t like the colloquialism). Learn to control your actions by witnessing your emotions rather than acting from them. Your life will improve!
