“Curiosity is idle only to those who fail to realize it may be a rare and indispensable thing.”  ~James Harvey Robinson

I can think of no better or more important topic for starting the New Year than curiosity. In fact, it’s so important to our emotional well being and the destiny of our planet that it will be the topic for two weeks in a row.  Today regards curiosity about ourselves. Next week, we’ll take on the importance of curiosity in our external experience.

Why do you believe what you believe? What produces the limitations you’ve imposed on your abilities? What’s behind the arising of your emotions? Why can’t you stay motivated?

Questions like these seldom get asked; at least not in the right spirit. Instead of wondering, we react. When we’re confused or stuck or upset, we tend to curse that state rather than employing curiosity. We become frustrated with ourselves.

But, learning to use the art of curiosity can shift many of our unpleasant experiences in a matter of moments. Rather than fighting your uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, try watching them with gentle curiosity. Be like a scientist to your own mind. There’s no right or wrong…just what is. One of the greatest things you can do is …get to know it.
